In addition, the channel provides HbbTV® functionality for viewers with compatible devices, that will offer additional benefits, like e.g. online video libraries, HD-Text or Second Screen.
The technical implementation of the project was realized by SES Platform Services and HMS in collaboration with the media authorities of Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB) and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania (MMV). The planning of the transmission window is done via HMS's broadcast automation solution DISA Broadcast Suite, but can also be realized via external CMS systems. The contents of all transmission windows are automatically transferred to HMS's central playout center in Berlin and from there they are transferred to satellite operator SES Platform Services as collaborative TV channel BB-MV-Lokal-TV.
Since the involved TV stations were previously only broadcasting in regional cable TV networks, the transmission via satellite allows an enormous increase of their reach and thus offers completely new possibilities for cooperations with advertising partners.
MABB director Dr. Hans Hege expressed this as follows:
"Regional TV is private television and funded by advertising. Range is the ultimate currency for advertising partners. Since we have made the transition to digital satellite transmission, we can reach the viewers who receive via satellite at a reasonable cost. After all, by now, more than half of all German TV households receive their signals via satellite."
