Test operation "Barker Channel" - local TV via satellite and HbbTV®

In collaboration with Projektbüro HbbTV, Sächsische Landesanstalt für privaten Rundfunk und neue Medien (SLM) and HMS, the test operation of a Barker channel could be realized. The channel is broadcasted via satellite and makes use of the HbbTV® standard. As provider of broadcast solutions HMS was responsible for the technical implementation of this project.

The aim of the project is to expand the technical reach of local TV operators in Saxony and broadcast the program to approximately one million satellite households (via DVB-S). So far, most programs of local TV operators could only be received via local cable networks.

Currently, two channels are signaled via satellite, that are operated by local TV providers Sachsen Fernsehen and KabelJournal. These channels are only used for the transmission of a URL. To broadcast the actual program content, the HbbTV® standard is used. By calling the transmitted URL the program content is received via internet as live stream. This happens automatically, without pressing the Red Button on on the remote control. After a short loading time the live stream is broadcasted in full screen, without a visible distinction to the viewer, compared to regular satellite channels.

"With the Barker Channel field test we promote for the first time an experimental approach for the development of satellite households. We want to use and merge the current development of HbbTV®, the progressive expansion of broadband and internet connections and the increasing acceptance of Smart TV viewers in general. Functioning operations provided, we believe that as long as we are staying close to broadcasters and handle the technological challenges without media breaks, this project has a very good chance of being accepted by the local TV audience [...]" said Martin Deitenbeck, CEO of SLM.

To receive the Barker Channel satellite program, a Smart TV or HbbTV®-capable satellite receiver with internet connection is required.

To receive the program, enter the following transponder parameters:

Satellite ASTRA 1KR19.2° East

  • Transponder: 1003
  • Frequency: 11.244GHz,
  • Polarization: Horizontal,
  • Modulation: DVB-S (QPSK)
  • Symbol rate: 22.000 Msymb
  • Code rate(FEC): 5/6
